critical and contexual awarness in creative media

Task 3

Our live TV show is about christmas so we tried to communicate a cheerful christmas themes thought comedy and does not target any individual gender however because the choices for topics to talk about were done by a group vote and their are more boys than girls in are class that could mean our project is decision are more driven to a male audience however we didn't start this project with that in mind and tried to make are project completely equal to all genders like with are sports segment where we talk about both men's and women's football however are presenters are predominantly male having 2 male presenter and only 1 female presenter. We choose to add a segment about the local food bank to talk about giving to the less fortunate and helping others especially around this time of year, we used the classic christmas colours green and red on set and on are logo. We convey are message through primary codes like with the costumes are presenters wear, we had are presenters wear christmas jumpers to convey are chrismas theme as well as give the classic warm and cheerful christmas feeling that people associate with christmas imagery like the jumper and the imagery shown on it, we also used body language and direct address and eye contact when the presenters talk about food bank and the other show segments which we tried to include are christmas theme in all are different genre segments like including a mince pies conspiracy theory in are food segment as well as doing the mince pie challenge in the food segment since mince pies are commonly associated with christmas.

Are set is designed to be christmassy with most of the props and set pieces being objects associated with christmas like chrismas trees(small ones) ,tinsel, fairy lights and christmas baubles excluding any religious based imagery for example angels since are show isn't aimed at any religious groups even if christmas is commonly associated with catholic or christian views however we hoped to show a more inclusive form of christmas in our project which is kept separate from religion.

Examples of props we used on set which have connotations are.

Are presenters will have Christmas jumpers, hats, and mugs these props directly link the presenters to the our christmas theme

We have 2 small christmas trees on ever sides of the set which are classic christmas imagery and are also the same colour of the tinsel this adds to the cheerful christmas themes and this also helps audience instantly recognise the theme of the program.

We also have advertisement for our colleges media departments tag magazine on are set having the magazines spread around the coffee table in the center of the set.

As I said before are class didn't go into this project planning to challenge any gender stereotypes nor do I feel we subverted any gender stereotypes either in fact i feel the opinion of the girls in are production team were underrepresented simply because are class is majority made up of boys, We planned are project based off of group voting however because their are more boys than girls in are class i feel some of the decisions are aimed towards a male opinion/point of view like when choosing the subject we were going to talk about on the show we ended up voting on what we should take out so things that the girls put up like news and animals were voted out by the boys while the thing the girls wanted removed like sports and gaming were kept in because the boys out voted them, this continued even into the production stage since more boy took up planning and scripting roles like directing or script writing as well as research.

I feel that with the information we have now on gender stereotypes we could apply our knowledge and subvert stereotypes in are next project by maybe satirizing gender role or subverting stereotypes by showing their exprems and reversing the genders, there are lots of ways we can apply gender theory to any future projects. It's important we offer our audience a broad range of gender representations because other wise people we become sensitized to gender stereotyping and any other discriminatory stereotypes however if we show a range of gender representation we are able to remove gender stereotype related problems like the ideas presented in the myth of beauty or any other similar concepts that are too common in modern media.
